If you have lost a loved one and would like some counselling
support, just call us. We take
self-referrals from individuals as well as referrals from organisations such as
social services, Jewish Care and synagogues.
We aren’t always able to answer the phone so please leave a message and we will call you back. When we ring, we’ll ask you some details and then we will be able to match you with one of our volunteer counsellors.
The next person you’ll hear from will be the counsellor you’ve been matched with. They’ll call you and arrange a time to come to see you. All our counselling visits take place in clients’ homes, although we are able to see clients elsewhere if for some reason seeing them in their homes isn’t possible, for example we can use a room in a synagogue or at a community centre.
Once your counsellor has arrived, the session – which lasts an hour – is yours to use as you wish. Your counsellor will be warm, understanding and non-judgmental. Everything you say to them will be in the strictest confidence.
Because the Jewish local community is so closely interwoven, we use the utmost care and discretion in ensuring our clients’ confidentiality. Counselling works best if the client and the counsellor don’t know each other when the counselling relationship begins.
Your counsellor can see you just the once --- or half a dozen times, or for many months, or – sometimes – for several years. We are able to support our clients for as long as it takes. For some clients, this may mean just a few visits are needed; for others, it’s a slower process. That doesn’t matter. Your grief is personal to you and there’s no rush.
After your counselling has come to an end, you may wish to use our Community Liaison service. This will involve a couple of visits from our specialist community liaison support worker, who can help you make contact with other services and organisations which could help you, for example day centres, social groups, and befriending support from synagogues.
Whilst you are very welcome to make a donation – which would be very much appreciated –everything that Ahada does is completely free of charge. Please see our About page for more information on how Ahada is funded.
