“It was reassuring to know that my grief was ‘normal,’ whatever that means”

Our counsellors are all volunteers who come from all walks of life, from every level of religious observance, and bring with them a huge variety of skills, experience and knowledge.  They are an amazing group of people who – for all kinds of reasons – choose to spend their valuable spare time supporting a stranger who is grieving.

All our counsellors undergo and complete our in-house Foundation Training which is delivered by our two psychotherapists from our Management Team.  The training has been created to ensure that the skills our volunteers already have, such as compassion, understanding and confidentiality, are augmented by newly taught skills such as active listening, a knowledge of the theory of grief, and a better understanding of boundaries.

We support our volunteers to do this essential work by providing monthly peer support groups and with ongoing training.

Many of our volunteers have gone on to use the skills, knowledge and experience they have gained at Ahada to do other things, such as studying to become psychotherapists, or learning to become advocacy workers.

There are several ways you can train to become a volunteer with Ahada.  We run our Foundation Training once every couple of years.  We also have a four-month Induction & Training Programme.  If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer counsellor with Ahada, please call us and we’ll tell you more."
